England thought the session belonged to them, with captain Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow looking well settled at the crease, but Mohammed Shami’s strikes at either end of the second session — he dismissed Dom Sibley in his first over after Lunch and Bairstow in his last before Tea — ensured India will go into the break a happy team. Root however, looks solid, having brought up his half-century. He and Bairstow put up 72 for the fourth wicket before Shami trapped the latter LBW for 29. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah struck early, trapping Rory Burns for a duck in the first over of the match. Sibley and Zak Crawley then rebuilt for England, with Crawley looking especially good, but Mohammed Siraj ended his stay at the crease. Root had earlier won the toss and elected to bat against India. KL Rahul has been drafted into the Indian side in place of the injured Shubman Gill, with Mayank Agarwal also suffering a concussion two days before the match. India have opted for the sole spinner in Ravindra Jadeja as Ravichandran Ashwin has been left out, while Ishant Sharma missed out due to a niggle.
